Lower energy demand
Switching off all electrical devices for 15 minutes reduces demand, builds awareness, and helps people see how much daily life depends on electricity.
A student-led initiative
15 minutes. Every week. Real change.
Earthquarter is a movement to make energy awareness part of everyday life - starting with students, spreading to families and communities.
JoinThe weekly action
Before starting, switch off all lights and electrical devices for 15 minutes, except urgent medical or life-saving needs.
The idea
Earthquarter began with a simple observation: electricity is often wasted through small unnoticed habits, not through bad intentions. A light left on. A fan running in an empty room. A charger plugged in long after it is needed.
Everyday practice
Families, schools, and students can make energy awareness visible by choosing one regular moment every week to pause, check, and switch off all electricity and electrical devices for 15 minutes, except urgent medical or life-saving needs.
Why it matters
Switching off all electrical devices for 15 minutes reduces demand, builds awareness, and helps people see how much daily life depends on electricity.
Using less electricity can reduce pressure on water used in parts of energy production and cooling.
Lower consumption means fewer avoidable emissions when electricity comes from carbon-heavy sources.
Before the quarter
Use this list before starting the 15-minute action. Switch off all electricity and electrical devices, except anything urgent, life-saving, medical, safety-related, or required by an adult or teacher.
For schools
Earthquarter gives student groups a clear weekly action they can organize, measure, and talk about. The habit is simple enough for every classroom, but meaningful enough to start bigger conversations about electricity, water, and climate responsibility.
Pick a regular 15-minute period that works for classrooms and homes.
Remind everyone to switch off all electricity for 15 minutes ( while keeping life saving, and adult-required electricity in concern)
Invite students to bring the same awareness into their families.
15-minute facts
Electricity saved depends on the wattage of the lights and how many are switched off. Earthquarter uses the standard calculation: watts multiplied by time, divided by 1000.
Formula: lights x watts x 0.25 hours / 1000 = kWh saved per 15-minute switch-off.
10 LED lights using 9 watts each save about 0.023 kWh every Earthquarter.
This is the amount saved by 10 LED bulbs using 9 watts each.
Repetition turns a small action into a consistent yearly habit.
Earthquarter works because the action is shared, not because one person does everything.
One year avoided waste
In one year, this weekly habit prevents about 1.17 kWh from being wasted by one participant, or 117 kWh across 100 participants.
1 LED light at 9 W: 15 minutes off saves 0.002 kWh.
1 old 60 W bulb: 15 minutes off saves 0.015 kWh.
Efficiency matters: the World Energy Council highlights energy efficiency as a direct path toward energy sustainability.
FAQ
Switch off all electricity and all electrical devices for 15 minutes: lights, fans, screens, chargers, and appliances. Keep on only urgent, medical, life-saving, safety-required, or adult-required electricity.
No. Anything urgent, life-saving, medical, safety-related, or required by an adult or teacher must stay on. Everything else using electricity should be switched off for the 15-minute Earthquarter.
Fifteen minutes is short enough for a school or family to try every week, but long enough to notice what usually stays on without anyone thinking about it.
One modern LED saves a small amount in 15 minutes. The bigger purpose is habit-building: many lights, many students, and many weeks make the saving easier to see.
Yes. A weekly announcement, a classroom checklist, and a student volunteer team are enough to start. The website timer can be projected or opened on a phone.

How was this idea created?
Earthquarter began with one student's simple observation: electricity is often wasted not because people do not care, but because daily routines move too fast for anyone to notice what has been left on.
At home and at school, the same pattern kept appearing - lights in empty rooms, fans running after everyone had left, and chargers still plugged in long after they were needed. That small but repeated waste inspired a bigger question: what if one short habit each week could help people pause, notice, and act together?
That question became Earthquarter. The idea was to create a 15-minute weekly switch-off that feels easy to begin, meaningful to repeat, and powerful enough to spread from students to families, classrooms, and communities.
Build a culture where young people lead practical climate action through awareness, consistency, and shared responsibility.
